The family name was changed to Bloch-Bauer the following year. When Maria Viktoria Bloch-Bauer was born on 18 February 1916, in Vienna, Austria, her father, Gustav Bloch, was 53 and her mother, Therese Bauer, was 41.

Altmann, who was born Maria Viktoria Bloch-Bauer in Vienna, came from a wealthy Jewish family that was stripped of its businesses, home and other wealth after Germany annexed Austria in 1938.
